Mauritania ready to defend territorial integrity

Mauritania is located in northwest Africa. The country’s President Cheikh el-Ghazouani is the current Chairman-in-Office of the African Union (UA). Mauritanian authorities again this week informed the international community of instability along the country's border with Mali. The Mauritanian army is ready to defend the country’s territorial integrity.

According to a report by RFI's French website, the authorities in Nouakchott once again blamed the tense situation on the border with Mali. A spokesperson for the Mauritanian government announced on Thursday that the border zone with Mali is unstable and that the Malian army and armed groups are active. The Mauritanian military will protect its citizens both inside and outside its borders. Two weeks ago, the Mauritanian Defense Minister visited Bamako and asked the Malian transitional government to explain why Mauritanian citizens were frequently attacked in Mali.

Mauritania will follow international procedures regarding incidents occurring outside its borders. Mauritania's foreign minister summoned the Malian ambassador to Nouakchott two weeks ago to protest against repeated attacks on innocent civilians in Mali. The Mauritanian Defense Minister, who went to Bamako to find a solution, pointed out that maintaining and strengthening relations between the two countries is a collective responsibility.

RFI’s French website noted that Mauritanian government spokesperson Nani Ould Chrouga made it clear that border management is difficult, especially in border areas with staggered populations and geography.
